Checking out Australia's Sapphire Coast. Looks pretty cool. I'd really like to check out Merimbula or Narooma, but just about any South Coast town looks pretty nice.

One Browser... Why Can't They Get It Right

So I decide to give FireFox for OS X a try. It's fast, especially when I enabled pipelining. It's pretty sweet. Now for the things that suck and keep me coming back to IE.

Why can't I tab through all (select, checkbox, etc...) form elements?!? Seriously, Safari didn't get it and neither does FireFox. Horrible.

about:config What the? Why aren't your prefs under prefs? Just put them in advanced. Prefs should be in prefs, right? Am I wrong here?

Consistency is key. When I am in a text field, it should behave like a text field. When I am in the address field of FireFox, and press the up arrow, my cursor should move to the start of the field. Down arrow should move me to the end of the field. It doesn't. Instead, I'm presented with my browser history. Safari screws this up too by using the address field as a % page loaded graphic (the browser de-selects your selected text once the page is done loading). I'm not sure which is worse.

Why can't I right click on an image and copy it to the clipboard?

Where are the aqua form elements?

An awesome thing happens with select menus. For some reason, FireFox decides on a max height for the select menu, and when you exceed this height, you get this quasi select menu with a scroll bar. This is like no other mac appplication. The best thing? It doesn't respond to the mouse scroll wheel. And, for some reason, when you go outside of the select menu, there is still a focused item in the select menu. Very weird...

Why does the status bar still show up even when javascript requests a new window without one?

No onError support for images? My onError events for images don't seem to work.

View source takes forever. Beach ball forever. Horrible.

Why does apple F (find) open some strange lower find menu that is like no ther mac application? It doesn't work like apple find at all, which is aggravating, because I'm so used to apple F, type in the word, and hit enter. Now, when I hit enter, it does what apple G does, find the next occurance of what I'm looking for.

Seriously, it may seem like I'm nitpicking, but these are all things that are hardwired into my brain, I don't think about them at all. FireFox changes all of this. It sucks.

This is why I hated linux for a desktop OS. No consistancy. Everyone re-invents the wheel, and nothing is the same across the board.

Change Default Broswer For Mac OS X

Weird, to switch your default broswer for Mac OSX, you need to open Safari and change it in Safari's preferences. Very strange, shouldn't this be in the system prefs?

Apple's Water Cooled G5

http://www.apple.com/powermac/design.html

I'm not sure I like this at all. It tells me these chips run really hot, which means the chances of a G5 laptop coming soon are getting slimmer. Instead of working so hard on cooling the G5, why not work on getting it to run cooler.

I've been researching MLS and real estate sites, and have come up with this great list: Sacramento Property, Glenn County Real Estate, Coconino County Real Estate, Alameda MLS, Real Estate New York City, Bradford County Real Estate, Amador MLS, Greene County MLS, and Mendocino County MLS.

Comcast Cable Modem

Wow, just got Comcast cable internet. Sweet. Half the price of my 384Kbps SDSL line, and I get a full 3Mbps download speed. Upload is slow at 256Kbps, but that's not too big of a deal.

The cable connection is way more restrictive than my old DSL line: no static IP, no running weird servers off my home connection. But for the price, it can't be beat. I just hope the speed stays where it's at right now, and the connection stays up.

Happy New Year!

Happy new years! Mine was spent in front of the TV. Nothing too exciting.

We're finally getting some well needed snow. At least a foot of snow has dropped in the past couple of days. Finally able to get on the mountain.

Some great counties are siskiyou county, onondaga county, alpine county, sd county, columbia county, pike county, kings county, westchester county, sussex county, sullivan county, riverside county.

Can't wait to ride with my new iPod. I love this thing. 20GB, and i'm able to have all of my music on there, with 10GB left over. I love my iPod. I was going to get the 40GB, but I'm glad I didn't. The 20GB is slimmer and lighter than the 40GB. Besides, I don't think I'll be able to fill my 20GB anytime soon. The 40GB would be definite overkill.

Safari Timeout Bug? Feature?

Another problem I have with Safari, the browser decides it will time itself out, regardless of what the server decides the timeout should be. This causes me huge problems. I have huge scripts I need to run, and I have set up PHP/Apache for longer timeouts. Safari decides that it's best if it decides when things should time out. Great! Is this a "feature" or a bug?

Music Download Surpass Sales?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/3237021.stm

It looks like singles are doing well on pay for download sites, but I think it's going to be a while before online downloads surpass album sales.

I wonder what kind of affect this will have on those on hit wonders? Probably not good, I think most people will be stoked to spend a buck for the song instead of buying an album of crap.

Panther Experience

So I installed 10.3 on my 400Mhz G4 tower.

I can definitely see a big increase in general performance over 10.2.x, the computer feels usable. All the Panther improvements are pretty cool as well. Postfix is a welcome sight over Sendmail, although my main goal is to become familiar with Qmail.

Installed Fink and played around with that for the first time. Pretty cool stuff. Got BIND configured and running as a nameserver. That's something I always wanted to learn, not nearly as hard as I thought it would be.

Apache, MySQL, PHP, all easy stuff. Now I gotta get Tomcat running and configured properly. That should be fun. Hopefully Qmail and Tomcat will be finkified, and I can cheat my way out of those installs :)

Went to the dentist today, which sucks cause I don't have a dental plans. Hopefully the bill won't be too high :(
